“BLUE & AltaSea will be USA's BlueTech bookends.” B. Zonis, CleantechOpen
We are excited and appreciative to introduce Bob Melvin in the first installment of the BLUE Excelerator’s “Meet the Mentor” Series.
BLUE Institute Labs was created in 2017 to
The "BLUE Innovation Center" (or just "BLUE") will be the first direct ocean access BlueTech, water security & climate resiliency hub on the US Eastern Seaboard and is currently in development to co-locate the two entities that it is comprised of - the BLUE Institute Labs, PBC and its sister non-profit 501c3 the BLUE Institute. The "BLUE" is designed to serve the blue cluster of academia, government and industry alongside start-ups & students and will offer shared collaborative on-sight services, co-working & office space, teaming opportunities, labs, Workforce development, and reliable ocean access for testing, training, teaming, and teaching in a BlueTech and the wider blue economy regional ecosystem.
During the facility development (currently going through development planning in Newport, RI and New Bedford & Plymouth/Boston, MA) the Blue Institute Labs will continue to assist the successful growth of BlueTech, Water Security, and the wider Blue Economy companies through the finest technical support, business growth, and investment opportunities. Our core entrepreneurial element - the BLUE Incubator - is now excitedly engaging its first twelve-month virtual cohort. During Winter 2021 we will have new BLUE programming such as our “Advanced Special Topics“ the "BLUE Excelerator." Additionally, we encourage you to stay in touch to learn about the forthcoming "BLUE Escalator,"* an advanced low residency program in development for "post-prototype" startups. As always stay safe, stay tuned, and we looking forward to seeing you at BLUE.
BLUE Institute & BLUE Institute Labs are mission driven for collaborative innovative solutions for clean water, climate resiliency, and healthy & secure oceans.
The Blue Institute Labs is incorporated as a Public Benefit Corporation. The creation of our "solutions driven and collaborative innovation" ecosystem facilitates the best steps forward to ensure successful entrepreneurs, thriving businesses, and an environmentally and economically sound planet. We are also committed to supporting education by partnering with graduate business classes at Northeastern, and each semester working with undergraduates at the Business School at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth to expose them to the wide array of opportunities in the varied burgeoning Blue sectors. Community actions like these, and Social Impact Investing are key to sustainable growth for both the "young" companies, and those in round A or B of investment.
We invite you to join us on our Blue journey. As a Public Benefit Corporation we have dedicated 10% of profits for scholarships and fellowships at the BLUE Institute - our sister non-profit 501c3 developing global hub for excellence in water education, research and community engagement, and home to the "BLUE Semester.” All donations to the Blue Institute would be greatly appreciated. If you are an acreditted investor or building a "blue" focused fund please reach out. firstname.lastname@example.org
To complement our location in Plymouth, Massachusetts we now have a landing space in Newport, Rhode Island at Innovate Newport while we seek a facility space to build out the first stages of the BLUE Innovation Center. The Newport area is a dynamic undersea BlueTech and Blue Economy ecosystem of industry, academia, the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), non-profits such as Save the Bay, IYRS, Sailors for the Sea, the Advanced Materials & Technology Center, SENEDIA, and the NavalX Northeast Tech Bridge.
Over the past two + years the BLUE Incubator, based in Plymouth Massachusetts and now expanded to New Bedford, has worked remotely with nine diverse startups from BlueTech to the wider Blue Economy - six of which had founders who were women and/or people of color. We are running an advanced BLUE Excelerator focused on pilots & prototyping. We also mentor with the region's premier Business Accelorators - Clean Tech Open and MassChallenge, and collaborate with the region's GreenTech & BlueTech ecosystem builders such as NECEC, District Hall/Venture Cafe Providence, ACTION Network, MTS, MOTN, and the Blue Innovation Symposium. We continue to attract the most innovative startup companies and the brightest minds from the "Triple Helix" of academia, industry, and government. We are excited to welcome our first virtual BLUE Incubator Cohort to be announced in March 2021.
